HOW BITE DRINKS SUCCESFULLY TOOK THE BELGIAN MARKET WITH A SMART STRATEGY

Let’s walk through how I successfully introduced Bite Drinks to the Belgian market, its very first export market. This case is a prime example of how a smart, well-aligned sales and marketing strategy can help a brand effectively enter a new market, secure its position, and pave the way for future growth.
THE MARKET

If you’re considering expanding as a non-Belgian European brand, or entering Europe as a non-EU player, Belgium is an ideal test market. Small in size, but big in relevance, it combines a dense network of quality venues with an internationally respected food culture.

Most importantly, its complex cultural and linguistic makeup makes it a mini-version of Europe itself. Where northern (Germanic) and southern (Latin) influences meet, you get a unique testing ground that reflects broader regional dynamics. It’s why big brands often pilot launches here. (More on that in a future article.)

THE PRODUCT

Product features are key to any successful go-to-market strategy. I’ve developed a sharp instinct for spotting innovative, high-quality products with impact potential, and Bite Drinks ticked all the boxes. So taking on the challenge of launching it in Belgium was a no-brainer.

Instead of shipping water, Bite reimagines how drinks are made and moved, reducing weight, waste and costs. Its 5L bag-in-box system replaces up to 250 drinks. That’s huge when compared to traditional glass packaging. The result; an easy-to-use premium product with a significantly lower footprint and a sharp price point.

THE GOALS

When kicking off, we defined a sharp set of goals:

  1. Introduce the brand across all market segments, from Michelin-starred venues to high-volume outlets, showcasing its versatility and reach.
  2. Establish a solid client base enabling the brand a strong position in future negotiations with a large national distribution partner enabling future growth.
  3. Open the door to established national distribution partners, aiming for a balanced, long-term deal within 1 to 2 years..
THE RESULTS

Results were achieved quickly, surpassing expectations and positioning the Belgian market as a key export showcase for the brand:

  1. Successfully introduced across a broad spectrum: from 3-, 2-, and 1-star Michelin restaurants, to quality bistros, bars, multi-location volume venues, beach bars, and even CRU, a premium retailer listing Anaperitivo.
  2. Built a strong and growing base of recurring clients, spanning from Michelin-starred establishments to large-scale hospitality groups.
  3. Connected with major national distributors such as Jet Import and Diageo’s Innovation Lab within just 9 months, ultimately securing a deal with the preferred partner within 2 years.
THE STRATEGY

A simple but effective strategy was crafted based upon 3 pillars;

. 1: THE SALES STRATEGY

I built a multi-segmented sales pipeline tailored to different customer types. During an initial two-month phase, we focused on key referential venues, Michelin-starred restaurants and Belgium’s top bars, to gather valuable feedback and build a strong reputation. Since brands grow both top-down and bottom-up, we quickly expanded our pipeline to cover every segment, including high-volume venues with multiple locations, leveraging the strong references established in the first phase.

. 2: THE CONTENT STRATEGY

Content is key to building references, attracting prospects, and empowering customers to promote the brand themselves. It’s a low-threshold marketing effort with wide impact for the brand, its customers, and their audiences, which I highly value in any integrated sales and marketing approach.

Together with photographer Jessica Boutsen, we created a content plan aligned with the sales strategy. Shortly after introducing the brand at each key venue, Jessica visited to produce high-quality visuals. These images weren’t just for us or the brand, they were shared with customers for their own promotion and visibility.

This approach generated valuable and relatable content and boosted brand visibility at a fraction of the cost of traditional product shoots, while maintaining top quality.

. 3: THE HYBRID PITCH

Bite’s innovative features and the dual focus on venues and national distributors called for a streamlined pitching approach. We developed a “mother pitch”,  a comprehensive presentation covering all product specs, USPs, and storytelling.

This core pitch allowed fast tailoring to each specific audience, whether venues, partners, or distributors, making the pitching process efficient and effective.
