GIMBER VALUABLE INSIGHTS FROM THE CRADLE OF INNOVATION
This is an article I’ve been meaning to write for a long time, a reflection on the fantastic ride I had as an in-house marketing and business development consultant at GIMBER during its explosive kick-start. To this day, clients and prospects regularly bring up GIMBER in conversations.
Often, they attribute its rapid growth to just one factor. But from the inside, I know it was much more than that: a bold, visionary approach led by the founder, one that radically shifted every layer of the business, from purpose and logistics to go-to-market strategy. It’s the perfect case study for any brand owner in the beverage space, packed with valuable lessons and takeaways
THE MARKET
The beverage market has traditionally been a slow adopter of innovation. Many brands play it safe, watching competitors before making moves, minimising risk but also missing opportunities.
At the time GIMBER was born, the non-alcoholic segment was marginal. It was dominated by sugary soft drinks, basic fruit juices, and the occasional Crodino. This category was often overlooked, But a sharp-eyed founder could spot what others missed: a quiet shift in end-consumer behaviour.
Younger generations and trendsetters were beginning to move away from alcohol, in search of quality alternatives, not quick derivatives. This shift was part of a broader movement toward health and conscious consumption.
In many ways, the founder’s personal frustration, attending countless events where the only non-alcoholic option was orange juice, made him the trendsetter himself. What others saw as a niche, tapped into a consumer expectation. And that foresight played a major role in GIMBER’s success.
THE PRODUCT
GIMBER’s purpose was naturally aligned with a rising audience. It became one of the first true adult alternatives to alcoholic beverages: organic, carefully sourced, and crafted around high-quality Peruvian ginger. This ginger was harder to process, but far superior in taste and depth compared to cheaper substitutes.
The result was a bold, well-balanced flavour profile that aligned perfectly with the growing popularity of ginger and its perceived health benefits.
GIMBER’s quality, complexity, and versatility struck a chord with its expanding target audience. It was embraced as much by chefs and high-end bartenders, who appreciated its mixability, as by everyday drinkers. From simple serves with sparkling water, to complex mocktails, cocktails, and even use in food seasoning, the possibilities were endless.
All of these product qualities formed another key pillar of GIMBER’s success.

THE ROUTE TO MARKET
GIMBER’s alternative route to market came naturally, thanks to the founder’s connection to the concept store scene, his wife owns one of Belgium’s top stores. Testing the product there turned out to be a strategic move. Concept stores attract early adopters who value quality, frequent high-end retailers and restaurants, and love sharing discoveries, GIMBER clicked instantly with this crowd.
As more stores followed, GIMBER’s online shop became the engine behind both sales and logistics. Rather than choosing a traditional distributor, the brand built a hybrid model, delivering to both B2B and B2C through in-house systems and a fulfilment partner. Basically the pioneering of Distribution 2.0.
This gave GIMBER full control, maximised margins, and allowed budget to be redirected to growth instead of distributor margin, a major edge over starting brands locked into traditional models. Despite early logistical challenges, this decision became a key pillar of GIMBER’s success.

MARKETING & SALES
With a clear purpose, strong product, and the right market fit, sales and marketing unfolded naturally. Influential chefs and bartenders became passionate brand ambassadors, often outperforming expectations. Media attention followed easily, aligning with a growing consumer interest in healthier, more conscious lifestyles.
Despite a limited budget, efforts were optimised to the fullest. The founder’s vision and drive made it exciting for me, as the in-house on-trade business development and marketing consultant, to test and implement activations, advertising, and creative brand-building from the ground up. The vibe in the team was real, it felt like something bigger was taking shape. And it did!
It remains one of my most cherished experiences, full of valuable lessons I still draw from today.
KEY TAKE-OUTS FROM GIMBER’S CASE
Whether you’re launching a beverage brand, or any product, here are some key take-outs to set yourself up for long-term growth and an unforgettable ride:
-
Start with purpose. Don’t just sell a product; stand for something real.
- Spot unmet needs. Align your offer with an emerging, underserved demand, not with what’s already out there.
- Build for quality. Don’t cut corners. Consumers reward products that deliver real value.
- Rethink your route to market. Go where your early believers are, and meet them on their terms.
- Own your operations. The easy way often means giving up control. Design systems that serve your growth, not just your convenience.
- Protect your margin. It gives you the freedom to reinvest and grow.
- Let marketing & sales flow from substance. If you do the above, sales and markering becomes easy.
